Force 12 has been working on a high efficiency 2-band vertical for 80 & 40 meters for several years. It is easy to make one that doesn't work well and several companies do that. Poor 80/40 verticals are a waste of your money. Sure, you can make some contacts, but overall, it is not a good investment and you have a lot of frustration on the air. Force 12 builds high efficiency antennas so you can enjoy radio.

We first produced an 80/40 rotatable dipole that was shown at the Visalia DX Convention a couple years ago. Designing a practical 2-band vertical required more development and the first result is the Tornado drive. The Tornado is a remote-controlled motor drive unit that expands and compresses a pair of coils for the Sigma-80 vertical dipole. These coils are about 4" in diameter and air-core for high Q and high efficiency. You can tune across the entire 80/75 meter bands with the Tornado. There is no moving contact (like mother motorized coils), so it will not arc over at power. We then added an internal, silver plated switch to the Tornado. This switch shorts out the two coils and puts the Sigma-80 on 40 meters as a full size vertical dipole. This was tested for about a year and has been in production for several months. The Sigma-80 is a large antenna and not everyone can put it up. We continued working on a smaller 2-band vertical.

We selected to make a 1/4 wavelength for 40, then add tuning across all of 80/75. The Tornado has now been enhanced into a single coil unit and it is the answer for a 1/4 wave 80/40 vertical antenna. The system is called the V84 Tornado. The V84 Tornado is available as a flagpole, or as a tapered vertical. Both are self-supporting.

The tremendous success of our flag pole antenna has enabled many hams to operate in restricted areas. We received many requests for ways to improve the flag pole antenna on the low bands: 40 and 80. We added fixed coils to improve the efficiency by base loading the flag pole antenna. We also made available extra sections to make it taller. There were many requests for a flag pole that would cover both 80 and 40 without a tuner. The V84 Tornado is the answer.
